The textiles we wear and surround ourselves with have a more significant impact on our health and the environment than most people realise. Understanding the properties, production methods, and trade-offs of different fibres can help you make more informed choices.

Organic cotton is the most accessible natural fibre alternative. Conventional cotton accounts for approximately 16% of global insecticide use despite covering only 2.4% of arable land. Organic cotton eliminates synthetic pesticides and typically uses less water, though it generally produces lower yields per hectare.

Linen, made from flax plants, is one of the most sustainable textile options available. Flax requires minimal water and pesticides, and the entire plant can be used. Linen is naturally hypoallergenic, antimicrobial, and becomes softer with each wash. It does wrinkle easily, which is worth noting if low-maintenance clothing is a priority.

Wool is a remarkable natural fibre with built-in temperature regulation, moisture-wicking properties, and natural fire resistance. Merino wool in particular has become popular for performance and everyday wear. When sourced responsibly, wool is biodegradable and renewable.

Hemp is experiencing a renaissance in the textile industry. It grows quickly with minimal water, naturally resists pests, and produces a durable fibre. Modern processing techniques have made hemp fabrics much softer than the rough material historically associated with the plant.
