In an era of information overload, the ability to evaluate health claims critically has become an essential life skill. Misinformation in the wellness space ranges from harmless exaggeration to genuinely dangerous advice, and learning to distinguish between them can protect both your health and your wallet.

The hierarchy of evidence is a useful starting framework. At the top sit systematic reviews and meta-analyses, which synthesise findings from multiple studies. Below these are randomised controlled trials, then cohort studies, case-control studies, case reports, and finally expert opinion. A single study, no matter how exciting its findings, should always be viewed as one piece of a larger puzzle.

Red flags in health claims include: appeals to ancient wisdom as evidence, use of the word 'toxins' without specifying which compounds, testimonials presented as proof of efficacy, claims that a single product or approach can cure multiple unrelated conditions, and any suggestion to stop taking prescribed medication.

Credential checking is straightforward but frequently overlooked. Genuine experts in a field will have relevant qualifications from accredited institutions, a publication record in peer-reviewed journals, and recognition from professional bodies. Self-awarded titles and credentials from unaccredited organisations should prompt scepticism.

The funding source of research matters. Industry-funded studies are not automatically invalid, but they are statistically more likely to produce results favourable to the funder. Transparency about conflicts of interest is a marker of research integrity.
