The modern fitness industry has created a paradox: people who exercise intensely for an hour then sit for the remaining fifteen waking hours. Functional movement advocates argue that how you move throughout the entire day matters far more than any single workout.

Functional movement focuses on patterns that mirror real-life activities: squatting, hinging, pushing, pulling, carrying, and rotating. These compound movements engage multiple muscle groups simultaneously and build practical strength that translates to everyday tasks.

The concept of 'movement nutrition' coined by biomechanist Katy Bowman suggests that our bodies need a varied diet of movement, just as they need varied nutrients. Sitting in a chair all day is the movement equivalent of eating only one food. The solution is not to add a gym session but to fundamentally change how you move throughout the day.

Simple changes can significantly increase your movement diversity: sitting on the floor instead of a sofa engages different muscle groups and requires more transitions. Walking on varied terrain rather than flat pavements challenges balance and proprioception. Carrying shopping bags rather than using a trolley provides loaded carrying practice.

Mobility work is the foundation that makes all other movement possible. Unlike flexibility (passive range of motion), mobility refers to active, controlled movement through a full range. Regular mobility practice can reduce injury risk, improve posture, and alleviate many common aches associated with sedentary lifestyles.
